Black Barn

Helston, Cornwall

The site is situated in rolling countryside, lying approximately 5 miles south of the charming market town of Helston. The existing structure is comprised of a derelict barn in very poor condition with a rotten wooden structure covered with a corrugated iron roof.

The new dwelling is proposed to be situated within the same footprint as the existing building.

The new arrangement seeks to engage with the open countryside views to the south west, whilst still offering enclosed privacy by incorporating the existing row of trees along its rear southern boundary.

The new dwelling is envisaged as a simple modernised barn with open views to the surrounding countryside. In order to take full advantage of its setting, Black Barn was conceived as a form belonging to the wider landscape views by using maximum openings directly to the stunning scenery.

The scheme considered the use of timber construction materials with black timber cladding to the exterior, referencing a vernacular architectural language through this contemporary re-imagining. This is also to reflect the local historical and harmony with context that are considered appropriate to retain an enhancement to the immediate setting.
