Barnstaple, North Devon

The project is to re-model a disused warehouse in the centre of Barnstaple, creating a modern and welcoming office and workshop space.

The site is located on the corner plot of Paiges Lane and Holland Street. The building has been untouched since a sequential demolitions and re-arrangements along Paiges Lane.

To re-align to the current street view, the scheme proposed to re-introduce the continuously pitched roof, seeking to mimic the façade pattern of the adjacent building. The front façade comprises of a double height glazed entrance and toughened glazed windows to allow natural light directly into the building; and the facade is a rendered and painted finish.

The side elevation has a series of slender slats shading to the upper level while providing natural lighting to the building. The concept is to contrast the main building with the existing stone flank wall, that has remained visible to reflect the townscape and historic street pattern.

The structure of the building is derived from recycled brick and timber materials - emphasising the typical traditional building form which allows essentially flexible layout in function and character of the interior.

The building accommodates two open office/workshop floors, including a meeting room and kitchen area; The large rear outside space has been enhanced for entertainment and social activities.
